Researchers report an overview of the antimicrobial and antiviral potential of pistachio nuts: studies show that Gram-positive bacterial strains, such as Staphylococcus aureus, are the most susceptible amongst bacteria, whereas antiviral effect has been reported against herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). Amongst the known pistachio compounds, zeaxanthin has been shown to affect both HSV-1 attachment penetration of human cells and viral DNA synthesis. These data suggest that pistachio extracts and derivatives could be used for the topical treatment of S. aureus skin infections and ocular herpes infections.

Nut Consumption and Survival in Patients With Stage III Colon Cancer: Results From CALGB 89803 (Alliance).

Observational studies have reported increased colon cancer recurrence and mortality in patients with states of hyperinsulinemia, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and high glycemic load diet. Nut intake has been associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance. However, the effect of nut intake on colon cancer recurrence and survival is not known.  Researchers conducted a prospective, observational study of 826 eligible patients with stage III colon cancer who reported dietary intake on food frequency questionnaires while enrolled onto a randomized adjuvant chemotherapy trial. Diets with a higher consumption of nuts may be associated with a significantly reduced incidence of cancer recurrence and death in patients with stage III colon cancer.

The American Pistachio Growers (APG) funds nutrition research grounded in sound science, using rigorous methodology conducted by autonomous researchers at well-established institutions. APG believes in transparency and objectivity in research, and therefore abides by the following research integrity guidelines and principles intended to minimize bias based on funding source:

  • The study design, protocol, execution of the study, interpretation of the results, and publication strategy is controlled by independent research investigators.
  • All studies funded by APG are to be based on factual information and designed consistent with the generally accepted principles of research to objectively evaluate a hypothesis or question with no bias towards a predetermined outcome.
  • APG requires the results of the research to be published, regardless of the outcome. Prior to the start of the study, investigators sign an agreement that provides independence to determine the publication strategy, while outlining the obligation to publish the results within a specified timeframe.
  • Investigators must disclose APG as the funding source in all publications and presentations of the research and must disclose all affiliations and other fundings sources.
  • APG does not support undisclosed paid authorship agreements.
  • Funding is not contingent upon the outcome of the study, and no additional funding or payment is provided based on a favorable outcome.

The studies suggest that pistachios have numerous health benefits, including serving as a source of important nutrients, as well as improved heart health and blood and glucose management, and providing antioxidant benefits. Studies also suggest that pistachios may help with weight management and lead to an improved overall diet quality.
